It's the gay marriage thing. I'm sick of hearing about it. But not just "it" as a topic, "it" as an example of the things I hate about politics the most.
No one takes time to stop and consider what really matters.
You are gay and want to be able to get married, fine. You object to calling it a civil union, even if it confers the same legal rights. Does it really matter what it's called?
By the same token, if you are against gay marriage, why? Give me a legal reason why they shouldn't be able to. Your beliefs and opinions do not matter, I want a valid legal reason.
At one time interracial marriage was illegal because... they couldn't come up with a reason either. It was because they were bigots, and they eventually lost because they didn't have any legal standing, just like you idiots will with the gay marriage issue.
But why it's even allowed to be a political issue in the first place, this is what really bothers me. Like censorship, abortion, and any number of other things that don't actually matter. It should have just been allowed. Just like drugs, prostitution and all the other things that are illegal because some people think they are wrong, or in the case of drugs, because the pharma companies and drug dealers pay the politicians to keep them that way.
They don't matter. If you don't like it, then you don't do it. Why should the rest of us be forced to adhere to your views. That was a rhetorical question, because the answer is 'we shouldn't'.
Let me put it this way. I am the type of person that just wants things to do what they're supposed to do. I want things to work. Most of the shit that passes for politics has nothing to do with how well things work.
I have recently become a fan of the Discworld books and can't help but admire the character of Lord Vetinari. A politician/ruler after my own heart. A tyrant whose only interest is making sure his city works. He doesn't care what people think about him, he just does whatever it takes to keep the cogs moving along in the clockwork.
I guess I have a unique perspective. I don't really care about much of anything, or perhaps I care about everything the same amount. Amounts to the same in the end.
I want the system to work. I want things to function, because the world is annoying when it doesn't. There is a gear broken on this bus, and it's grinding is getting on my nerves.
